Priscilla Proudwoman Stadler, Containing Stone I, Sculpture, Stone, Paper, String, 22 x 14 x 16” 2006

Stone is the physical form of the fundamental energy of this planet. As an artist, there is a deep resonance in carving stone, which is the most elemental, ancient, and powerful of materials. Stone has been a major departure from my previous work (which often used delicate materials – paper and fabric) and from my background in 2-D work, primarily printmaking and drawing.

After spending about seven years learning to carve, I am now struggling to expand the scope of my stone sculpture by integrating it with some of my previous materials, themes, and ways of working, while exploring how these streåams of work may flow together.

At the heart of my work is a yearning to express the essential elements of life – and death – on this planet. The themes that permeate my work – transition, containment, incongruity, fragility, decay – represent ways of grappling with different aspects of this desire for connection.
