“Squaretangle # 3,” from the Squaretangle Series is
my tribute to Josef Albers, who used the square to demonstrate color
theory.
By juxtaposing colors, one square inside another, Albers showed color
relationships—how the same color seemed to change depending
upon what color surrounded it. This series focuses on color, composition,
texture and form.
I used various color combinations that resonate
with each other and combined them with a contrasting color that adds
an element of surprise and a note of whimsy. Underlying the oils,
a layer of acrylic resin squares and lines gives added texture to
the surface of the canvas.
