“Gravity” is the synergy between real
and imagined spaces. It is impossible to make time stand still, yet
through photos, keepsakes and the mass media-fuelled obsession with
eternal youth, we try to forever hold on to that perfect moment (itself
already passed). Gravity is quite literally a world turned on its
head, a woman /child’s lonely wait for that ultimate celebration
of youth.
I work predominantly with video, performance and installation to
explore issues of identity, cultural stereotypes, gender and race.
Diaspora and my background as a Singaporean-Chinese-Australian drive
the way I view the world, and therefore, the multi-layered way I
construct it through the lense.
My work is heavily influenced by popular culture – movies,
music and media imagery. My videos often parody themes, styles or
shots from cinema, and as a result, my work could be described as
the “thinking woman’s MTV”.
