My sculptures are informed by nature, but not
necessarily about nature.
The Rock Series was inspired by the relationships that rocks form
with water, mountains, plants and trees. I photograph extensively;
place dozens of photographs on my studio walls and begin to synthesize
it all as I work.
The photos are my sketches. Working with balsa wood, weeds and wax,
I am excited by a more abstract challenge: that of creating dialogues
between the visual, physical and emotional qualities inherent in
the forms, the
textures and the colors. When worthy, the sculpture is cast at the
foundry, where I complete the metal work and patination. Finally,
I hope to mirror the energy and dignity of nature.
