Alex Pearl, Sing, Video, 1 min 32 sec, 2005

A lollypop stick sings a haunting lullaby.

This piece was originally made on location in a bar in Amsterdam. It is part of a number of spur of the moment videos made in the last two years. There are five versions, each of them singing the same song. Each version has performed individually on small or large screen but also as a sort of out of sync barbershop quartet.

  Alex Pearl
Alex Pearl makes short films, which have been screened all over the world at film festivals, galleries, online, and Ipods and mobile phones. He works quickly on suddenly apprehended ideas, and often uses video as a parallel activity to drawing. These pieces are also comparable with the idea of the sketch or doodle; an initial, throwaway idea made visible. Many of his shorter video pieces have a lot in common with automatic drawing in that he sets up situations where chance plays a large part in the outcome. His films revolve around the fate of simple creatures conjured from lollipop sticks or ping-pong balls. Linking them gives a feeling of melancholy brought on by the powerlessness of his objects to resist external forces or overcome their own limitations.
